Prophecy and Jesus' Birth (John 1:1-5,14)
Gary McManus, 11/29/2015Part of the Christmas series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
First Sunday in Advent John 1:1-5, 14
Prophecy. Thought about it?
Things that will happen?
Predictions?
Political commentary?
Insight? The prophet sees so deeply into
what is going on that he knows what is coming?
Basic question when we look at prophecy:
Is the prophecy intended for the prophet’s people
OR is the prophets’ prophecy intended for us.
Or. . .both?
The near future or distant future?
Did the prophet know?
How did they communicate?
Different in different books. . .
Jeremiah(Jeremiah 1, Jeremiah 2:31) and
Zechariah (Zechariah 5:1, 5:9. 6:1) often
SEE God’s word AS a vision, not words.
And . . .Psalm 119, verse 162:
The Word of God is treasure.
. .a VAST treasure. . .“better than thousands
of gold and silver pieces.” --Ps. 119: 72
See Matthew 7:24-27
This season we look at Messiah prophecy
(Messianic prophecies).
Why?
1. Salvation is from the Jews. Matthew 1:1
2. God is working God’s plan.
3. The fulfillment of these prophecies at Christmas
gives us confidence that God will work out His
purposes in our lives
Genesis 12:1-3
There are several promises there that
have come true, aren’t there?
See Matthew 1:1.
Note Genesis 22:18(NIV)
with today’s scripture.
Should we not be AMAZED?
How the Lord achieved what he promised?
This is often the most difficult part
for us to understand.
The creatures cannot fully grasp the
ways of their creator. (Isaiah 55:8)
We don’t see HOW. . .That is okay.
. . .God has promised it. . .
Rejoice that we may trust our Lord
with His promises to us now and always.
Amen.
