Are you a Pilgrim?
Pilgrims didn’t call themselves “pilgrims.”
They called each other “saints.” The Bible
verse quoted often led them to be called
“separatists.” “Pruitan” refers to their
desire to purify the practice of faith from
any direction from authorities or adornment.
Pilgrim Backstory
The separation of church and state is
an American idea/ideal. It was UNKNOWN in
Europe; even in Protestant lands. Reform in the
church was viewed as a threat to the King—the King
who controlled the church. Pastors were State employees.
Therefore, Americans established a separation
(not elimination) of church and state.

The Skinny on "Puritans"
When Protestants (those protesting) left the Roman Catholic Church it was a time (still) called The Reformation. The Reformation took place differently in
each state/nation. In England, then King, Henry VIII, left the Roman Catholic Church because the Pope would not grant him a divorce. That meant that English "reform" began at the top--the King (and not for reasons of teaching or practice). Other nations' reforms started "at the bottom"; Martin Luther in Germany was a lowly monk. [Remember, Kings were heads of the church as well as heads of state; just as our President is Commander-in-Chief of all armed forces.]
Change came slowly in England. Reform was too slow for those called the Puritans--a name of ridicule for those who wanted to make worship based on the Bible (pure).
The Bible-reading-Puritans had to leave England (which wasn't easy) and decided to come to the New World.
